چکیده

A periodically driven lattice with two commensurate spatial periodicities is found to exhibit super metallic states characterized by enhancements in wave packet spreading and entropy. These resonances occur at critical values of parameters where multi-band dispersion curves reduce to a universal function that is topologically a circle and the effective quantum dynamics describes free propagation. Sandwiching every resonant state are a pair of anti-resonant trapped states distinguished by dips in entropy where the transport, as seen in the spreading rate, is only somewhat inhibited. Existing in gapless phases fo the spectrum, a sequence of these peaks and dips are interspersed by gapped phases assocated with flat band states where both the wave packet spreading as well as the entropy exhibit local minima.

The periodically kicked quantum rotor is known for non-classical effects such as quantum localisation in angular momentum space or quantum resonances in rotational excitation. These phenomena have been studied in diverse systems mimicking the kicked rotor, such as cold atoms in optical lattices, or coupled photonic structures. Recently, it was predicted that several solid state quantum localisa...

A universal ionization threshold for strongly driven Rydberg states

The suppression of quantum transport across disordered media is one of the most spectacular consequences of destructive quantum interference. Originally predicted by Anderson [1] in his treatment of electrons propagating in disordered one dimensional lattices, Anderson localization has now become a general concept which prevails in abundant scenarios of coherent quantum transport in the presenc...

Evidence for a quantum-to-classical transition in a pair of coupled quantum rotors.

The understanding of how classical dynamics can emerge in closed quantum systems is a problem of fundamental importance. Remarkably, while classical behavior usually arises from coupling to thermal fluctuations or random spectral noise, it may also be an innate property of certain isolated, periodically driven quantum systems. Here, we experimentally realize the simplest such system, consisting...

Transition to instability in a periodically kicked Bose-Einstein condensate on a ring

A periodically kicked ring of a Bose-Einstein condensate is considered as a nonlinear generalization of the quantum kicked rotor, where the nonlinearity stems from the mean-field interactions between the condensed atoms. For weak interactions, periodic motion antiresonance becomes quasiperiodic quantum beating but remains stable. There exists a critical strength of interactions beyond which qua...

Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion

We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear oscillator, may be realised in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion, interacting with a sequence of standing wave pulses. Unlike the original optical scheme [G.J.Milburn and C.A.Holmes, Phys. Rev A, 44, 4704, (1991) ], the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation. This should permit ...
